It's more than just boys.

We reported in yesterday's Vortex on the legal hellhole the archdiocese of Baltimore has fallen into, owing to a flood of 600 lawsuits over sexual predation of minors.

It is very likely that, in short order, Abp. William Lori will file for bankruptcy protection for his archdiocese — the first diocese established in America.

Aside from the symbolic blow such a move would be to the Church in the United States — joining 30 other dioceses in filing for bankruptcy for the same reason — there is an entirely overlooked aspect to all this as well.

It isn't just minors that have been sexually assaulted, although those cases are the ones that make headlines because of the victims' ages.

There are also vulnerable adults — especially seminarians who have been and are assaulted by homopredator clergy.

Recall that most of Theodore McCarrick's victims were not minors, although significantly some were, but were mostly seminarians at his Jersey Shore beach house — and then this went on for years.

Charges and accusations just like this have plagued seminaries and their faculties for decades now, up to and including the prestigious bishop factory in Rome: the North American College.

Most of the time, corrupt leaders circle the wagons and get rid of the whistle-blower seminarians and then return to business as usual.

One such leader who is accused of this is the Baltimore archbishop, William Lori, the chaplain of the Knights of Columbus who, by the way, has yet to release any statement on the Maryland attorney general's report proving Lori kept predators and cover-up personnel in place.

He knew what had happened and participated in the cover-up. For that alone, if he doesn't resign, he should be removed by Pope Francis.

The list keeps growing.

With the recent announcement by the diocese of Oakland, California, that it too would now join the growing list of bankrupt dioceses in the United States, the number now stands at 30 out of approximately 180. That's more than 15% of all dioceses in the country. However, there is a monster case, a very likely bankruptcy that is sitting out there in the wings, very likely to be filed sooner rather than later.

Church Militant broke the news a couple of weeks ago of the release of the state of Maryland attorney general's report nailing the archdiocese of Baltimore in its complicity in covering up hundreds of sex abuse cases. Baltimore is massively important because of its symbolic value to the Church here in the United States, being the first diocese erected in the new nation and therefore having pride of place.

For the past few decades, the archdiocese, it turns out, has been a cesspool of cover-up, secret payouts, shifting and/or hiding culprit clergy and doling out huge sums of parshioners' money to lawyers to keep it all under wraps. Church Militant has been all over this story for quite some time now, even before the A.G. report, and joining me on set for this Vortex is our producer/reporter Nick Wylie, who has been looking deeply into all this for us.

You learn a lot when records become public.

As more and more dioceses around the country declare bankruptcy in the face of a flood of sex abuse lawsuits, bankruptcy is proving to be a double-edged sword for the bishops.

First, and very important to understand, their declaring bankruptcy has nothing to do with not having the money (or resources) — they do. It has everything to do with preventing victims from gaining access to it.

And even before bankruptcy, dioceses, like the one here in Detroit under the leadership of the duplicitous Abp. Allen Vigneron, take proactive steps to shield their assets. A couple of years ago, Vigneron and his complicit legal team from Bodman schemed up a crafty plan. 

They took all of the diocese's assets and shifted them into a brand new company called Mooney Real Estate Holdings, which officially has nothing to do with the archdiocese. The only member of the corporation is Abp. Allen Vigneron.

So, officially, all of the assets of the archdiocese no longer belong to the archdiocese, and, therefore, the archdiocese can't be sued for them. We'll see if that legal maneuver holds up in court when the lawsuits are revealed here in Michigan (expected later this year).

Remember that the state attorney general's office raided the Detroit chancery a while back and has been sifting through boxes of confiscated files since then. But the move in Detroit by Vigneron points to the larger issue that bishops are now having to face the music for their immoral, sinful and (perhaps) criminal actions of covering up sex abuse for decades, burying the cases in archives and hoping they just get forgotten about.

Ruling over a graveyard.

One thing that happens when you do the work we do is you travel frequently. That means that, many times, you get to the Mass that fits the flight schedule in any given diocese.

Recently, our travels took us to a couple of parishes where the reality of the future of the Church of Nice is staring you right in the face. The "where" doesn't really matter because, frankly, this is the case all over America. Since I refuse to wear a mask at a Mass, I usually sit far away from people and near the back in these circumstances.

That affords me the opportunity to see the entire congregation, and I have to tell you, it's extremely sad. First, the overwhelming majority of heads are gray and white — people well into retirement (in short, old). There's nothing wrong with old people going to Mass. In fact, an old person who doesn't go to Mass is a fool, as the need is more pressing as their time on earth lessens.

But when it's only old people in the Church, then something is wrong. There was the customary smattering of families, a small number, with dad and mom in their mid-40s with their 2.1 children in tow — normally a son obviously bored off his nut and a daughter texting like crazy.

You do see the occasional toddler, but he's usually with grandparents. Aside from that, you're really hard-pressed to see essentially anyone between 20 and 60. At two different Masses over two weekends, that was the scene. You could count on one hand — at two different weekend Masses — the number of young men and women by themselves.
