Fatherhood and the Rise of Pornography

Whenever a man who struggles with pornography addiction comes to me for help, I usually view the pornography use as merely a symptom. Whether he is aware of it or not, the man may be using pornography to cope with deep emotional wounds. By self-medicating with pornography, the man conditions himself to turn to pornography whenever he’s feeling stressed, angry, sad, ashamed, abandoned, etc. as a result of those wounds. While his attraction to pornography is like a moth to a flame it’s simply a coping mechanism.

One specific wound that plays a critical role in the development of addictions is an attachment wound. Attachment refers to the emotional bond an infant develops with his primary caregiver. This usually refers to the mother; however, with most male pornography/sex addicts, I have found attachment wounds with the father to be more critical. A healthy attachment develops when a father is actively involved in a child’s life starting at birth. The father provides ample love, affection, and nurturance through eye contact, talking and singing to the child in a gentle voice, playing with the child, comforting the child, and meeting the child’s basic needs. This aids in healthy neural development for the child (Flores, 2011).

Through this bonded relationship the child observes how his father effectively deals with stressful situations. This enables the child to trust his father and feel safe with him. He knows he can always count on his father to take care of him and keep him safe. This is called co-regulation. From this process, a deep confidence develops within the child. He not only learns from his father how to deal with life’s stressful situations, but he also believes he has the strength and the ability to successfully deal with them. This is called self-regulation. A child with a healthy, secure attachment to his father can develop healthy self-regulation, and thus deal with life’s struggles effectively (Flores, 2011).

Unfortunately, many men who become addicted do not have a healthy attachment with their fathers...

Digital pornography, more than any activists, campaigns, or political strategies, was what mainstreamed alternative sexual lifestyles.

A couple of years back, I participated in an hourlong debate on one of the biggest radio stations in London, Ontario, on the subject “Is porn good for society?” I was arguing that pornography is poisonous, and a queer studies professor was taking the opposite view. Over the course of the hour, she began to steadily agree with me that pornography’s impacts were pernicious. Porn fueled rape culture; taught a perverse view of sex; it shaped young, impressionable minds with violent and degrading sexual content.

Toward the end of the debate, I asked her how she could agree with me on nearly every point — but still defended the idea that porn was good for society.

Her answer was revealing. As a queer person, she said, she had needed pornography when she was young to explore her sexuality. To put it bluntly, many young people identifying as LGBT need porn to figure out how to put their sexual views into practice. Porn functions as a “how-to” manual. Thus, this professor was willing to cede that the vast majority of porn was poisonous. But she maintained that in the case of young, non-straight people trying to figure things out — porn was necessary, and even good. This conversation sprang to mind when Pink News, a radical LGBT outlet, published an article titled “Tory bid to revive failed ‘porn-block’ ban could put LGBT+ users at risk, critics warn.”

My addiction to pornography and it's relationship with this girl.

I have watched porn and masturbated for 8 years in a row. It was so much damage that I did to my reward system that I was even unable to cry and believed that I was "emotionally strong". Lie. I had my emotions asleep.

I started NoFap a couple of years ago and my rewards system is improving, yet still screwed up. AND I THINK it's affecting my I THINK Oneitis that I have with this girl.

I mean, I don't know if this is Oneitis or my addiction to porn disguised as addiction to her. (Cross addiction, also known as addiction transfer or Addiction Interaction Disorder, is when a person has two or more addictive behaviors. The addictions can include alcohol or other drugs, but can also include addictions to food, gambling, sex, gaming or other compulsive behaviors.)

In my case, my first addiction is pornography and masturbation, I transmuted it to my addiction to her. But I think it's not ONEITIS, this is where I need your help people.

I want to cry every time she stops giving me the chemicals she used to give me, oxytocin and dopamine. However, after I cry, she doesn't give a damn to me. As if my Oneitis disappeared for a moment. The same thing happens to me with pornography, and I believe that everyone who watches pornography. We enter the porn page with great enthusiasm and when we finish watching the video then we do not care about the pornography, we even feel guilty.

The same thing happens to me with this girl. While she is in her group of her choir (in the afternoon) I feel sad and cry. But I'm done crying and I don't care about her.

What do you think, does anyone here have a porn addiction and went through something similar?

Indeed, Vivid parallels the Hollywood studio system of the 1930s and 1940s, particularly in its exclusive contracts to porn stars who are hired and moulded by Hirsch. Vivid was the subject of a behind-the-scenes reality TV show recently broadcast on Channel 4.

Is watching porn bad for the brain? I need a confirmation to stop watching it. On the web some say that it's bad and the other half says the opposite!
