@Psychonaut 4" is a good all around size for everything. Maybe a bit big for carry, but that can be subjective. But as far as revolvers go 686 is hard to beat. They are solid guns.

@skunimatrix Thanks! I really like the 686. I would like to start with a standard size, would that be 4"? Perhaps in the future, I could buy a barrel in a different size as well. I was looking at Dan Wesson 715s. Comes with 3 barrels out of the box.

@Psychonaut Any preferences on barrel length or finish? Ruger and S&W are the two brands to look at that price point. Personally I'm snake bit when it comes to Ruger products as it seems like everyone I buy is a lemon, but everyone else seems to be okay. So I skew towards S&W.

@Redreformedbro My personal recommendation is find a range that rents guns and get a couple to try out and work for you. Personally I've been carrying the Walther PPS M1/Classic for a decade. There are things I like and dislike about it, but it is no longer being made. But the market is awash in sub compact carry guns at or below the $400 price point. People like their Glock 43's, M&P Shields, or P365 are also popular choices these days. Other people prefer a slightly larger gun like the HK VP30, Glock 19, Walther PPQ.
Then again maybe something like the LCPII in 380 because of its size is small and light enough you actually carry is the answer.
