The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan have primarily killed more Muslims than Christians, reflecting the demographics of Sudan. Sudan is predominantly Muslim (over 90% of the population), and most of the RSF's operations, including in Darfur and during recent conflicts, have targeted Muslim-majority communities.

The RSF's violence has often been driven by ethnic and political motivations rather than religious ones. For example:

Darfur Conflict:

The RSF (and its predecessor, the Janjaweed militias) targeted ethnic African Muslim communities in Darfur, such as the Fur, Zaghawa, and Masalit groups, accused of supporting rebel movements. These attacks included mass killings, rape, and forced displacement, leading to one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history. Current Conflict (2023):

The ongoing power struggle between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has largely affected urban areas like Khartoum and regions with predominantly Muslim populations. Civilians caught in crossfire, targeted during raids, or displaced are overwhelmingly Muslim. While Christians in Sudan have also faced persecution and violence, the RSF’s actions are not specifically directed at religious groups but are more focused on political and ethnic suppression. Therefore, Muslims have borne the brunt of the RSF's violence due to their greater presence in the regions affected by its operations.

Christians in Sudan have faced violence and intimidation from extremist groups, including the Rapid Support Forces, which has been accused of committing atrocities against Christians, including killings, rapes, and the burning of villages.

In January 2024, Muslim extremists from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) set a church building on fire in Wad Medani, destroying Bibles, hymnbooks, and church supplies. This incident occurred about a week after Karbino Bla, a Christian Sudanese man, succumbed to his injuries from an RSF assault on January 5.

The Sudanese government has been accused of waging a war against Christians, particularly in the southern regions, with the aim of Islamizing the country. This has led to the destruction of churches, the killing of Christian leaders, and the forced conversion of Christians to Islam.

Christians in Sudan have been forced to convert to Islam, with some being threatened with death or imprisonment if they refuse. This has led to a significant number of Christians being forced to abandon their faith.

Sudan has been criticized for its lack of religious freedom, with the government imposing strict Islamic laws on all citizens. This has made it difficult for Christians to practice their faith openly and has led to the persecution of those who do.

It was also known as the West African Province (Wilayat Garb Ifrqiya), and, after pledging allegiance to Islamic State in 2015, was briefly called Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA) or Islamic State's West African Province (ISWAP).

After Boko Haram declared its allegiance to the Islamic State, an IS statement proclaimed "It was the rejection of nationalism that drove the mujahidin (jihad fighters) in Nigeria to give bay'ah (fealty) to the Islamic State and wage war against the Nigerian murtaddin (apostates) fighting for the Nigerian taghut (idolatrous tyrant)".[77] The movement is diffuse, and fighters who are associated with it follow the Salafi doctrine.

Members' beliefs tend to be centered on strict adherence to Wahhabism.

The group has denounced the members of the Sufi and the Shiite sects as infidels,[83] and also mainstream Sunni Muslims who fail to support their jihad. This willingness to takfir – i.e. accuse self-professed Muslims of being apostates from Islam and thus subject to execution[84] – is a departure from mainstream Islam but not Salafi jihadism.

In July 2014, Shekau released a 16-minute video in which he voiced his support for ISIL's leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, al-Qaeda's leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and the Afghan Taliban's leader Mullah Omar.[99] In March 2015, Shekau pledged allegiance to ISIS self-styled caliph Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi and became "West African Province" (Wilayat Garb Ifriqiyah), i.e. the West African province of the Islamic State. However, in August 2016, Al-Baghdadi replaced Shekau with Abu Musab al-Barnawi, the son of the Boko Haram's previous leader Muhammad Yusuf, their motivation (at least according to one source) being to trim back Shekau's tendency to apply takfir (accusations of apostasy) to "all mainstream Muslims"

Konduga mosque shooting : On 11 August, Boko Haram killed 44 people in a mass shooting at a mosque in Konduga, Borno.

It has long been alleged that Boko Haram had a relationship with al-Qaeda. In 2011, letters from Boko Haram were reportedly found in Osama bin Laden's compound.[343]

The UN found that a "number of Boko Haram members fought alongside al Qaeda affiliated groups in Mali in 2012 and 2013 before returning to Nigeria with terrorist expertise".

Boko Haram, a terrorist group primarily active in Nigeria and surrounding regions, has killed more Muslims than Christians. While the group has targeted Christians, including through church attacks, abductions, and killings, the majority of their victims have been Muslims. Boko Haram’s violence has often affected predominantly Muslim communities in the northeastern part of Nigeria.

Boko Haram has specifically targeted Christian communities, including attacks on holy days such as Christmas and Easter.

In some cases, Christian homes have been marked with signs indicating “infidel” or “non-Muslim,” followed by attacks and killings by Boko Haram.
